Common questions
Why doesn't Flown work with my Garmin GTX 345?
Garmin's panel-mounted avionics — the GTX 345, the GTN navigators, and Flight Stream — send their position over Connext, which is Garmin's own protocol. Garmin does not license Connext to third-party developers, so there is no lawful way for Flown to read it, and none is planned.
What works instead is GDL90, the open format every portable receiver broadcasts: Stratux, Stratus, SkyEcho, and anything else that speaks it. Turn on External GPS in Settings → GPS, join the receiver's Wi-Fi, and it will be found automatically.
Do I need an external receiver at all?
No. Everything in Flown works on the iPhone's own GPS. An external receiver gives a better position fix in a metal airframe, but it is an enhancement, never a requirement.
Why didn't my flight get logged automatically?
Automatic logging needs Always location permission, and it needs to be armed — either by turning on GPS Auto-Detect Flights, or by tapping Record a Flight, both in Settings → GPS. Check that first.
Bear in mind that a detected flight never enters your logbook by itself. It waits in the Unconfirmed list for you to review and accept it. That is deliberate: a logbook is a legal record, and an app that silently writes entries into one cannot be trusted the first time it gets something wrong.
My imported flights show night currency as unconfirmed. Why?
Garmin Pilot's export records how many landings you made at night, but not whether they were full-stop landings — and FAA night passenger currency (§61.57(b)) requires full-stop specifically. Rather than guess, Flown marks those landings as unknown and tells you so.
Guessing low would understate your currency; guessing high would overstate it. Both are wrong in a legal record. Open the affected flights and set the full-stop counts yourself and the warning clears.
How do I move my logbook from ForeFlight or Garmin Pilot?
Export a CSV from ForeFlight Web (Logbook → Export) or from fly.garmin.com (Logbook → Setup → Export), then in Flown go to Settings → Import and choose the file. Flown previews everything before it commits, flags duplicates, and will not half-import: if anything fails, nothing is written.
Garmin exports two files — the flight entries and the aircraft types. Import both if you can; the aircraft file is what fills in class, engine, and equipment details.
Can I get my data back out?
Always, and it is never behind the paywall. Flown exports to ForeFlight CSV, Garmin Pilot CSV, a complete CSV of its own, a CSV with columns you choose, and a full JSON backup including endorsements and GPS tracks. Being easy to leave is deliberate.
My purchase didn't unlock anything.
Open Flown, go to Settings, and tap Restore Purchases. Purchases attach to your Apple ID, so this works on any device signed in to the same account. If it still does not unlock, email us with the date of purchase and we will help.
Is my logbook backed up?
If you are signed in to iCloud, your logbook syncs through your own iCloud account and is included in your Apple backups. It is also worth exporting a JSON backup occasionally from Settings → Export and keeping it somewhere you control — good practice for any record you would hate to lose.
Is Flown a legal determination of my currency?
No, and it says so in the app. Flown calculates currency from the records in your logbook and presents it as a convenience. The accuracy and legality of your records remain your responsibility as pilot in command. Always verify against the current text of 14 CFR Part 61.
